The Wietpas was a membership card system implemented in the Netherlands in 2012 to regulate the sale of cannabis in coffee shops. It required individuals to be Dutch residents and register for a membership card in order to purchase cannabis from licensed coffee shops. The Wietpas system was controversial and faced criticism for restricting access to cannabis for tourists and non-residents. It was eventually abolished in 2013 due to these criticisms and the negative impact it had on tourism in the Netherlands. **

The Wietpas is valid in the Netherlands, specifically in the southern provinces of Limburg, Noord-Brabant, and Zeeland. It was introduced in these regions as a membership card system for access to coffeeshops, which are establishments where the sale of cannabis products is tolerated under certain conditions. The Wietpas was later replaced by the Weedpass system in 2013, which has similar restrictions and is also limited to certain areas of the Netherlands. **

The Maastricht Wietpas, also known as the Weed Pass, was a system implemented in the Netherlands in 2012 to regulate the sale of cannabis in coffee shops. However, in 2017/2018, the Maastricht Wietpas was no longer in effect as the Dutch government decided to abolish the system due to various issues and criticisms. This allowed tourists and visitors to once again purchase cannabis in Maastricht coffee shops without the need for a Wietpas. **
